| Brian Burres (4-5, 4.87) vs. Shaun Marcum (5-3, 2.63 ) BALTIMORE 1. B. Roberts, 2B 2. N. Markakis, RF 3. M. Mora, 3B 4. A. Huff, DH 5. K. Millar, 1B 6. L. Scott, LF 7. A. Jones, CF 8. R. Hernandez, C 9. F. Bynum, SS TORONTO1. S. Stewart, DH 2. M. Scutaro, 2B 3. A. Rios, CF 4. S. Rolen, 3B 5. K. Mench, LF 6. L. Overbay, 1B 7. R. Barajas, C 8. B. Wilkerson, RF 9. D. Eckstein, SS The Jays won a season-high 5 straight home games, by a combined 27-7 score, and went 10-4 at Rogers Centre in May. But they're stumbling home after dropping 4 of the last 5 games on a 9-game trip. Shaun Marcum won in Baltimore on April 15, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in 6 2/3 innings of an 11-3 victory. He had gone winless in 6 previous appearances -- 4 starts -- against the Orioles. Marcum gave up a career-high 11 hits Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, but allowed just 2 runs in 7 innings of Toronto's 3-2, 10-inning defeat. He leads the AL with a .181 opponent batting average, and has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his 12 starts this year.Brian Burres has allowed 15 earned runs and 22 hits in 7 2/3 innings over his last 2 starts, including 6 home runs. In 2 career starts at Rogers Centre, Burres has allowed 2 runs in 12 innings while going 1-1. The last time he faced the Jays came in Baltimore and he was ripped for 7 runs and 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings of an 11-4 loss last Sept. 25. | |

| Some msicellaneous thoughts/questions about this game:
This looks to be a huge pitching mismatch tonight. Burres is skating on thin ice
If Burres has yet another disastrous start tonight, do you just keep sending him out there?
We have the MASN B-team announcers tonight with Hunter and Martinez. Gary Thorne may be doing the NCAA super-regional games for ESPN. And we may not see much of him when the College World Series starts in Omaha next weekend.
Are those Jays retro uniforms butt-ugly or what?
Is Melvin Mora leading the league in GIDP?

| I half-jokingly wonder if the Orioles would be better off if they have the pitcher bat and use the DH for the SS. Bynum is weak at the plate. Cintron is probably a shade better. I wonder if they'll pursue a SS via FA or perhaps a trade of prospects? There aren't any homegrown SS on the horizon.
Marcum is going to be tough to beat, especially with the #9 hole being close to an automatic out.

| This game is pretty boring. If you want to see some good action watch the FedEx airplane crash scene from "Castaway" that is coming up in about 3 minutes on TNT | |

| When the Blue Jays lost 2 of 3 to the Yankees I suddenly got a sinking feeling that the Yankees are going to go on a tear soon. And be tough this year. And maybe be in the Playoffs again. | |

| That may have been our best shot to put some runs on the bioard. Another out on the basepaths hurts a potential rally. The O's must lead MLB in that category. | |

| Cormier does the 3rd to 1st pickoff play and catches the runner off, then doesn't throw the freakin ball. For the second straight game, he looks like a deer in the headlights out there. | |

| That Cincinnati kid, Bruce, already with 10 RBI and Batting .450! Of course he will be figured out soon, but great start. | |

| Amazing what a pitching change will do.
Mora seems to get his few hits when it counts.
I thought castaway was a great movie.

| Wheels are coming off for the Jays! TJB's man ties it up. I guess Marcum knows how Guthrie feels. | |

Make that 6! Jones goes deep too! Toronto probably wants to make their relievers "castaways" after this awful performance following a great performance by Marcum.

Where are all those guys who recently said Jones couldn't hit major league pitching?

Varies day-to-day. Discussion is usually good (no petty squabbling!) but we don't have enough contributors. Helps when Birdman is around.

| Bradford should not be the guy we bring in a close game in the 8th inning. | |

| Wow. Are the Orioles about to implode here?
Maybe for the next game someone should post another reminder on sunspot that the game thread is over here.
